Make your exteriors irresistible
Never make the mistake of neglecting the exterior of your home because it extends into the interiors and reflects what one can expect inside the house. They have to be as beautiful and alluring as the interiors. Here are a few things you could do to make them inviting and unusual.
* Start with the boundary wall. Add interest by cladding it with natural stone. These are also available in tile form, which can just be cemented to the original wall. It will add a natural look to the wall. Moreover, stone looks classy. The look can be further enhanced on the inner side by having wooden rafters fixed to them in patterns. It would be good to have an ivy cover done.
* The main gate should be interesting. Experiment with material. A wickety wooden gate combined with wrought iron adds an old world charm, which is extremely popular. Plain powder coated wrought iron is also very in. People these days prefer to get it covered in acrylic sheets in various patterns, colours and finishes.
* Get interesting lampposts installed. Iron in shaded glass has always been popular but you can add an unusual twist by going in for the new ones made of fibre. These are available in unique shapes like a wooden torch, pumpkins, etc. They can be changed to go with the season and the occasion. Make sure your name plate is well-highlighted.
* The parapet walls can be given a wrought iron railing. Wood looks rich on the parapet walls. You could also blend the two together. Sleeper and mango wood is ideal for this purpose.
* Go with the season when you are planning for a seating area in the lawn. It’s trendy now to have a shed like sit-out where people can enjoy a cuppa while it rains. This can be easily done by placing a fibre dome and matching it with iron chairs, a table and a sofa. Place wooden pillars with rafters at strategic points. Flowering plants can be placed on these.
* Coming to the facade, this can also be given a lot of character by using highlights such as bright tiles around the bay window. A part of the wall can also be given a brick look. Artificial brick tiles which are available in the market will help you do so. Beige with mustard and off white with green, brown and rust are the ‘in’ combos.
* The door to your interiors can be made to look more appealing. Use fancy knockers. Forget the gold plated kind, the raw iron look is in now. Get something unusual made, maybe a bell or a chain with a heavy iron ball. Drill in some hinges from outside if you desire the castle door look.
* Do not forget to use lighting to highlight the beauty outside. The wooden pillars can be fixed with focus lights. Have a ceiling light fixed in front of the door. The lampposts should throw out soft light. Do not use white light in the exteriors. It will spoil the show
