Make your bedroom a luxury suite

Bedrooms have definitely evolved. They have moved beyond being just a place for sleeping. They are now an extended living room, contained in the privacy of a bedroom, a master suite of sorts that will allow people to relax and unwind. Therefore, the more spacious they are, the better.

* If you are still going by the standard set of two beds, two nightstands, a dresser and a writing space, you had better go in for an immediate change. The trend is leaning towards a romantic combo of selective furniture pieces that will create the ambience of a personal getaway. This could include a separate seating area, a huge window and a lot of space comfort.

* If your bedroom can’t accommodate these, better creep into the living area and add it to your bedroom. The extra square footage you are left with will give you a lot of decorating possibilities. In fact you can pull down the wall and have a stylised, foldable partition in fibre or thin wood. You can add more style to the partition by getting it painted in patterns or go ahead and get a wall-size painting done.

* Add a little balcony, a wooden patio which juts out of the room into the exterior. Use good quality weathered wood. Wood not only adds style but also weathers well with all seasons. Old Burma teak would be the ideal choice. A large window opening is necessary. The shape of the window depends on an individual’s choice.

* Lighting also makes a lot of difference. It’s not necessary that you’ll enter the bedroom in the same mood everyday. Therefore have at least two or three different types of lighting options. A ceiling light is necessary to brighten up the room. Soft yellow lights would be just right for a mellow, warm feel. Of late people also have started going in for candle lighting and they either have a small space decorated only with candles or a mini glass jhoomer, with candle holders, for cosy, romantic nights.

* Furniture can be the first building block in creating a rapturous atmosphere within a room. Avoid using excessive seating arrangements. It’s your bedroom and not the living room. A cosy, cushy two seater sink-in sofa by the window, combined with a low coffee table, would be perfect. m Get a storage space created to store all your CDs, DVDs and other gadgets.

* Most people prefer to read before they sleep. Therefore it would be sensible to have a small library space to display your books. You just need to stretch and pull one out. It would also make sense to add a small writing space with a table, chair and a stylish lamp.

* Bedroom colours can be as varied as people’s moods and personalities. Deep colours are being experimented with. The colour this season is cherry red. Get three of your walls painted red and add contrast with a lighter shade on the fourth wall. Or just add a red panel to your room.
